Ultraviolet radiation is electromagnetic radiation which has a higher frequency than the light we can see.  It lies beyond the blue or violet end of the visible spectrum.  Each photon (particle) of ultraviolet light carries more energy than photons of visible light, so molecules which absorb ultra violet radiation recive a large amount of energy.  This extra energy can cause the moelecule to break apart.  This means that chemical reactions can take place in ultra violet light which would not otherwise occur ultraviolet light in sunlight can cause people skin to burn.  Large amount of ultraviolet radiation can be dangerous.  The ozone layer is important because it absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation from the sun before it reach the earth.
